Craig Calfee, one of the early pioneers of carbon fiber bikes, will be on hand at the 1st Annual San Jose Mini Maker Faire to showoff one of Calfee Design’s newest projects, the DIY Bamboo Bicycle Kit! Starting in 1995 as a publicity stunt, Craig’s first bamboo bike evolved into well-tested new models for the general public.
In his travels through Africa in the 1980s, Craig noticed a surplus of bamboo and deficits of bicycles and jobs. Calfee has since worked with various organizations to bring bamboo bicycle production to Ghana to help create jobs and affordable clean transportation options for Ghanaians. Bamboo is a renewable and plentiful resource and can be used construct strong, lightweight frames. Bamboo bikes can also be made without power tools and offer a relatively affordable and CO2-free mode of transportation for people across the world!
Come out to the San Jose Mini Maker Faire on Sunday September 6 from 10:00am-6:00pm to see demonstrations of the Calfee DIY Bike Kit and much more! For tickets visit:
